A faulty pulley being incorrectly pressed onto the pump shaft resulted in faulty power steering pumps. The manufacturer required a cost-effective solution to verify that the pulley was securely pressed into the pump shaft prior to final assembly. In one case, Sciemetric’s press monitoring system was installed to find the defects before final assembly by performing various tests with each part including press force, and pulley height checks during assembly, providing detailed signatures of the press, position while storing all data for complete traceability. An automotive parts manufacturer was unable to verify that the tube insertion process was free of defects to avoid potential power steering failures in the field.  A sigPOD press monitor was configured to monitor press load versus distance and successfully detects defects in-process such as too large insertion hole, loose tube and debris. Sciemetric’s sigPOD has easily configurable software to test sampling rates, precise triggers, waveform calculations and signature based checks. A manufacturer was experiencing problems with the inconsistent quality of their shipped engines, leading to customer complaints and expensive teardowns after engine hot/cold test. The problem was traced to improperly stacked compression rings.
